Occupational cancer in Asia
Worldwide epidemic of occupational cancer is killing one person every minute, but this tragedy is being ignored by both official regulators and employers. In many Asian countries even Trade Unions have been ignoring these deaths. Workers, in many cases either do not know the hazards of the materials they are exposed to and those who now are afraid of losing jobs. Large numbers of workers are outside coverage of social security schemes, labor laws are seldom implemented and now in the name of liberalization the Courts, too are taking U turn. In such situation no worker can think of taking risk.

Thursday, 28 September 2006 |
After the last issue, on 20 the June we lost Vijay Kanhere, founder of Occupational Health & Safety Centre, Mumbai and an activist known all grassroots OHS organizations in Asia. When I was thinking seriously
to interview him for this issue, we lost him all of sudden. It is a great loss not only to Indian movement
on OHS but also to Asian movement, particularly ANROAV. He was member of the advisory committee of
ANROAV. We pay our tribute to the great soul. His life and work shall keep inspiring us for a long time to
come. He was mentor of many activists like me.

GLOBALIZING THE MOVEMENT
Capital is being globalized. under the leadership of WTO, National Governments are prepared to go to any extent to welcome capital. Even within Sovereign nations like India, the State Governments are competing with each other to invite multinationals and national industries to put up their facilities in their state. To attract them they are preparing SEZs and declare various liberties within their capacity. In this situation TU movement has been weakened. Workers are compelled to surrender the rights they got after years of struggle.
