The Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims (ANROEV) is in solidarity with the Japanese people in this trying times. Our hopes and prayers are for the swiftest recovery of the members of the network, the working people and the whole Japanese people from the terrible disaster brought about by the earthquake.
The massive earthquake, measuring 8.9, struck last Friday, February 11, 2011 near the coast of Honshu, Japan. The undersea earthquake caused 10 meter high tsunami which swept many towns in the northern part of the country. Thousands are feared to have perished and millions are affected greatly. The country is also dealing with risks posed by nuclear power plants which have been damaged by the quake. We are inspired and moved by the high level of preparedness of the population during emergency situations and empathy during calamitous situations. Footages during the earthquake saw a prepared population, reactions were methodical and with clear purpose, reducing further damage that could have been a result of a frightened populace. Search rescue operations were immediately swung into action, with rescue workers deploying to various locations to assist victims and survivors. The footages of the people giving the young and elderly immediate attention were moving. But despite this, we are gravely concerned of the risks to the people and environment posed by the damaged nuclear power plants. The Japanese authorities must ensure safety, not only of the workers who are immediately dealing with the situation, but also the greater population who are at risks of radiation exposure. We expect honesty and transparency in reporting the prevailing situation. We are expecting appropriate safety standards are in placed to protect not only the victims and survivors, but also the rescue workers. By implementing appropriate safety measures, damage to the lives of the people is reduced. We are also concerned of the release of asbestos in the environment. The authorities must ensure that exposure of the population to the cancer-causing dust is immediately addressed. In solidarity for the safety and health of the people of Japan, ANROEV |
