GLOBALIZING THE MOVEMENT Capital is being globalized. under the leadership of WTO, National Governments are prepared to go to any extent to welcome capital. Even within Sovereign nations like India, the State Governments are competing with each other to invite multinationals and national industries to put up their facilities in their state. To attract them they are preparing SEZs and declare various liberties within their capacity. In this situation TU movement has been weakened. Workers are compelled to surrender the rights they got after years of struggle.
Saving jobs is the biggest challenge. Then come the wages – wages as per the last wage agreements or minimum wages decided by the Government and timely disbursement of wages. Workers have to accept extended hours of work without any negotiations. Compulsory overtimes – even at odd hours – paid at a rate decided by management has to be agreed to. Rights under law for OHS and under the agreements have to be forgotten. These come at the end and there is no talk about it. This may be truer for Asian countries then developed world. |
