For 2 months now, our brothers and sisters from Ssangyong Motors have occupied the factory located in Pyeongtaek, Korea to protest the  major restructuring plan that calls for the shedding of 2,646 workers, or 36 percent of the work force. Some 1,670 have left the company voluntarily but more workers are expecting to be laid off.

To avoid job cuts, the union have offered the management rotation of jobs on unpaid leave, as long as all jobs could be kept. But this seems not enough for the management as they still wanted to sack 60% of the remaining 974 workers. This was unacceptable to the workers.

The workers feels strongly against this move by the management. In 2004, almost half of Ssangyong was sold to a Chinese company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC), one of China's largest vehicle manufacturers. Workers were up in arms to this move since they believed SAIC does not have the capacity to improve Ssangyong. Later on the workers were proven right, as Ssangyong-SAIC failed to deliver its promise to develop a new model each year.

In January 2009 the car company applied for court receivership. Its sales were down 30% in 2008 compared to the previous year. The responsibility for the financial difficulty provoking the need for restructuring, falls squarely on the company and the government. The workers have worked hard for years and performed their duty, some for even 20 years.

Since the workers have occupied the plant in Pyeongtaek, riot police have continuously attacked them. For around a month, the water tank supplying the factory was repeatedly tampered with, but the Ssangyong worker colleagues outside repeatedly fixed and guarded it. However the company has found a way to shut off the water completely.

Also, from 16th July, the management has blocked all food from entering the factory and then on 19th, it even disallowed medical doctors and nurses from entering the compound. Since then, the workers have found no way to drink water, use the toilet, or even wash wounds from tear gas chemicals.

Even supporting groups, including unions (esp the metalworkers union), church (esp. Catholic), political parties, NGOs, student groups have been attacked with water-cannon, shot with tear gas and arrested as they try to bring water and food to our brothers and sisters inside the Ssangyong factory.

Yesterday, August 5, 2009, the riot police have started raiding the plant full force. Reports from the field are saying:

“assembly line 3 and 4 building is on fire with fire spreading to paint shop. Swat team helicoptered in and are gang-beating union members they catch on the roof of the assembly plant.

Two union members fell off the roof of the assembly line  building while trying to evade the swat team and fell to the ground. they will try to get to the paint shop from the assembly shop because
the buildings are linked by 3rd floor. Goons destroyed supporters tents outside the plant again this morning.”
